Dahua Park City: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

Shanghai Puspace Architectural Design Co's Innovative Approach to Exhibition Space Design

The project is located between mountains and a lake, a unique feature that significantly influenced the design. The main building body is stilted, giving it the appearance of a fish. The multi-layer terraces and long French windows maximize the view of the surrounding landscape, helping the architecture blend into the environment. The visual experience of the building is closely related to sight lines, with the design focusing on how to "hide" and "expose" elements throughout the project.

To realize the curved facade, the designers selected triangular flat panels of different sizes and stitched them together to form an integrated curved surface. The construction team combined two triangular plates into a unit to minimize difficulties and speed up the construction. This innovative approach resulted in a perfect collage of 3,276 panels for the curved surfaces.

The project covers a gross floor area of 2,200 square meters and a base area of 5,000 square meters. The construction involved close collaboration among multiple parties, with a digital architectural model created for clearer division of construction work. A 1:1 local sample wall was constructed to study how to stitch aluminum panels together perfectly.

The design process was not without its challenges. The site was surrounded by shanty towns that had not been demolished and the existing buildings on the western cliff. It had an elevation difference of 10 meters, and the only road leading to the site was small and cramped. However, once the site was elevated, it could provide a panoramic view of both the lake and mountains nearby. The designers also had to deal with the processing and installation of 2,276 similar but different panels, each with different perforation patterns, and lighting was another critical problem.

Despite these challenges, the design team managed to create a building that not only meets current needs for use but also presents the image of the whole area. The narrow road leading to the site was turned into a tranquil twisting path, creating varying experiences along the way. The building adopts complicated curved forms, outlining multi-level spaces. The interior circulation route creates a spatial sequence and embraces the lake view to provide pleasing experiences.

The Dahua Park City project was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, a testament to the innovative and trendsetting design that reflects the designer's prodigy and wisdom. This architectural marvel advances art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
